Storium Theory: Writing a Move – Neutral Cards

This post originally appeared on Gaming Creatively on August 11th, 2016. Last week, I discussed the thought process for writing a move using a Strength or a Weakness card, and I promised to come back this week to discuss writing a move with Neutral cards. There are three types of Neutral cards in Storium: Subplots, Assets, and Goals. Playing to them will feel a little different, but functionally, as far as their effect on a challenge, they’re similar. Let’s talk about that first, and then we can get into a bit about how you might play to each card type. Impact On a Challenge When you play a Neutral card, the current “trend” of a challenge doesn’t change. A challenge that is trending Strong is still trending Strong, with the same...

Storium Theory: Writing a Move – Strength and Weakness Cards

This post originally appeared on Gaming Creatively on August 4th, 2016. A long, long time ago (in internet terms), on a blog…well, on a blog pretty much right here, I wrote about the need to make an impact with your card plays. Today, I’d like to go into that a bit more–to give some more analysis on each part of what “making an impact” means, and what I think about. When I wrote the article back then (and followed it up with “Play to Your Cards” later), I identified a few things that I think about when I play a card–things that affect how I write my move: The type of card I’ve played: Strength, Weakness, or Neutral? The name and description of the card. The Strong and Weak Outcomes of the challenge. The...

Episode 31! An Evening with Rattannah

In this episode, we meet Zachary Ruffing aka Rattannah. Show Notes 00:32 Intro 00:50 Geek-Out: Zachary Ruffing aka Rattannah 18:40 Outcomes or is Neutral Meh? 74:00 Outro   Guest Host Bio: I’ve been on Storium for a little under a year, but I’ve been writing poems, shorts stories and even “lyrics” since I was 6. I enjoy action, a little suspense, and thrillers. My favorite genres are fantasy and a Sci-Fi, and my favorite part of storium is creating characters. Whatever time that’s not spent on storium is directed towards studies, instructing in Martial Arts, or playing video games. I also run my own podcast for a gaming Organization called Templar Gaming, and I host it on YouTube. Little known fact, there WERE 16 other SigmaWarlord’s…but we don’t talk about...

Storium Theory: Death of Player Characters

This post originally appeared on Gaming Creatively on July 28th, 2016. So, last week, we discussed character death in general. Now, I’d like to specifically discuss considerations for Player Character death in Storium. As with last week’s article, what I’m discussing here is actual death–not death-as-transition, as used for stories about people becoming ghosts or some such, but death-as-end, the death that removes characters from stories. The potential death of a Player Character (PC hereafter) will involve all the same considerations as the death of any other character. Everything I said last week still applies–and perhaps even moreso than usual, since PCs are usually–usually–the main characters in a story, or at the...
